Terms Used

CIF (cost, insurance & freight) Price to a specific port of import (usually used only on ship transport).

CFR (cost & freight) Price to a specific port of import (insurance not included ) (usually used only on ship transport).

CPT (CIP) (carriage paid to) (carriage and insurance paid to) Price to a specific port of import. Normally used when shipping by means other than ship - i.e. by air or land).

EXW (ex works) Price at point of origin where work was done (i.e. ex factory, ex mill, ex warehouse).

FCA (free carrier) Price to a specific place and placed on board a transport (replaces FOB -Free On Board).

FOB (free on board) Price to a specific place, included delivery of goods on board transport.

Common International Shipping Documents All paperwork related to international shipment of goods (normally the job of the freight forwarder) (documents can include: bill of loading , certificate of origin , commercial invoice , consular invoice)

Bill of Lading A contract between a shipper and a common carrier, showing the terms for the transport of the goods. This can act as a negotiable instrument showing the terms under which title transfers from seller to the buyer. If authorized, a master bill of lading can be issued by the carrier (steamship - holding a container of good) to the freight forwarder, who can in turn issue "daughter" bills of lading to the individual exporters that have goods in the container (consolidated shipment).

Certificate of Origin A document that attests to the origin of shipment of goods from a particular country (port).

Commercial Invoice Invoice that identifies (among several items) the type, quantity and packaging of goods being held as well as the terms of the transaction.

Consular Invoice Document used to pass goods through customs at point of destination, containing (among other items) a detailed description of the goods shipped (assisting in the collection of duties and fees upon arrival at the port of destination).
